Taste of Home Food Stylist, Kathryn Conrad, shares a few easy tips for dressing up a simple bowl of soup.

When people discover that I am a food stylist the top three questions I am asked are these, and in this order:

  • Is the food you style real?
  • Do you still cook at home?
  • Do you ever style your food at home?

The answer to all three is YES!

All of the food I style is real, I cook at home almost every day – and yep, I sure do apply some food styling in my home kitchen. I don’t mean whipping up crazy, fancy garnishes or frosting cakes every night (I save that for weekends!) – but day in, day out – who has the time?

What my experience as a chef and a food stylist has taught me is that a simple, little touch – one little garnish–can make a big difference.

Starting with plain old tomato soup I reached into my pantry and in no time came up with 7 garnishes that added visual appeal, a pop of flavor and interesting texture to an otherwise ho-hum dish. Check out these snapshots for inspiration and see what’s in your pantry….

Tomato Soup with Fritos

Corn Chips: Add some crunch to your soup with a few corn chips.

Soup with Basil

Parsley and cracked pepper: Fresh parsley and smoky black pepper add a little extra zing to your sweet tomato soup.

Tomato with Parmesan

Parmesan cheese: Nutty parmesan cheese is a pretty compliment for plain tomato soup.

Heavy Cream

Heavy cream: Drizzle heavy cream into your soup then swirl it around with the tip of your spoon for an artistic and delicious effect.

Crutons with Tomato Soup

Croutons: Looking for a crunch? Throw in some croutons!

Sour Cream and Chives

Sour cream and chives: A dollop of sour cream and some freshly chopped chives are all you need to dress up a simple bowl of soup.

Plain Tomato Soup

But sometimes …. simple is always best.
