Apple crisp is a heartwarming way to enjoy the fall season. Sweet, tender apples smothered in cinnamon, sugar, and a toasted oat topping – it’s as close to food heaven as you can get.
One of the best things about apple crisp is it’s versatility. With such simple ingredients, it’s easy to adapt a recipe by adding tart cranberries, warm caramel, or crunchy walnuts. Each addition giving the simple crisp a whole new personality.
Recently I’ve been alternating between adding spiced rum raisins or dried cherries into my apple crisp. The rum raisins add spicy of depth to an already sweet treat, while the cherries give off a subtle burst of summer. Of course, each crisp is served with homemade vanilla ice cream, and maybe, just maybe a drizzle of caramel if I’m feeling really indulgent.
What are some of your favorite ways to dress up an apple crisp? Do you serve your crisp with ice cream or homemade whipped cream?
