Taste of Home’s Food Affair: Classic & Quirky State Fair Eats

Taste of Home has invaded the Wisconsin State Fair, and we’re gobbling up some classic and quirky good eats. Armed with empty stomachs and lots of napkins we’ve been grazing our way through the Fair. Here’s a peek and a few thoughts on some of the eats we’ve tasted so far…

Deep Fried Butter

Deep Fried Butter
Every year the Wisconsin State Fair likes to debut a new, and seemingly impossible, deep-fried treat. This year, it’s all about the deep fried butter. Frozen seasoned butter patties are dipped in a thick batter then flash fried – resulting in a little packet of melted butter.  Be sure to have plenty of napkins on hand, because upon first bite the molten hot butter oozes out of the fried batter and all over your fingers.  The batter is a little chewy, and these little envelopes are practically flavorless, save for the pools of butter that spill out.

Final Verdict: Not worth the hype. We think you could totally skip these talked-about deep-fried patties.

Krispy Kreme Burger

Krispy Kreme Burger
A favorite of Paula Deen, the Krispy Kreme Burger is making an appearance at State Fairs around the country. A rich, glazed donut is sliced in half, then stuffed with a sizzling burger patty and a slice of cheese. Surprisingly bland, this treat would be better with a seasoned breakfast sausage than a plain burger.

Final Verdict: So-so. While the Krispy Kreme donut is warm, soft, and sugary, the rest of this gut busting item can be left behind.

Deep-Fried Snickers

Deep Fried Snicker Bars
Melty. Gooey. Totally delicious. This State Fair classic has hands-down a favorite. Upon first bite, you get a mouthful of that signature sweet-salty goodness that Snicker bars are known for.  Wrapped in a pancake-like batter, this chocolaty treat is incredibly rich. We recommend you share!

Final Verdict: Absolute Must. If you’re heading to the Fair, make room for the decadent delight.

Oreo

Deep Fried Oreos
Tall glass of milk required! These little chocolate pillows of heaven are sprinkled with a light dusting of powdered sugar and have such an intense chocolate flavor, that would satisfy just about anyone with a sweet tooth.  The sweet batter blends beautifully with the chocolate Oreos, creating a cake-like texture similar to a whoopie pie.

Final Verdict: Trust me. You’ll be glad you indulged in these little gems.

I have been a fan and faithful user of Taste of Home for at least ten years so I know how wonderful they are about posting healthy options. But considering the obesity epidemic facing the US, this post is a bit negligent. To each his own the part of the user, or eater, but still.
I would love to share any blogs you have on healthy gems you find at State Fairs, for adults and children, to indulge in without such horrible physical consequence.
Many thanks on your consideration!

Hi Megan – I appreciate your comments and thoughts. I’ll keep my eyes open for healthier options while at the fair. Please keep in mind that this post is meant to be fun, and we’re not at all endorsing a steady diet of these kinds of foods. This is supposed to be a treat – something enjoyed once in a while, and preferable with friends – as these foods are much too rich to enjoin by ones self.

My stomach cringed looking at and reading these. Have you seen the Deep Fried Kool-Aid too? Ugh…

That’s on the list of things to try today, along with deep fried beer … there are some really interesting things at State Fairs.

State Fair food is meant to be unique. That’s why the State Fair only happens ONCE a year. It’s fun to try the different foods, but I would NEVER make them at home. They are a gastronomical nightmare!

Oh Megan, simmer down. It’s an 11 day event. I don’t think taste of home is encouraging everyone to eat this way everyday. Go eat a salad, and leave the fun stuff for non fuddy duddy’s

Our state fair for Massachusetts actually starts in September and is for the 5 states that make up New England so you can imagine the culinary treats we have. We have had the fried butter and the krispy kreme cheeseburger for a couple of years, although I have yet to try them. Last year I did try the fried jelly beans, which is a pancake type batter with cut up Jelly Belly jelly beans. It was good but not enough jelly beans per batter ratio. I think the fairs will fry just about anything. I agree with your comment to the first post – definitely not eating this year round, once a year is perfectly fine when you count in all the walking you do around the grounds.

What stand did you find the fried Oreos?

Sarah @ Love & homemade recipes August 11, 2011 at 8:28 am

Hi Brent –
They were at the beignet stand along the Grand Stand.

Oh come on Morgan! State Fairs are noted for their outrageous eats. It’s not like they are daily faire.

I had no idea they had Krispy Kreme burgers! I was eyeing up the deep-fryed Snickers, but we decided to try the deep-fryed cheese curds this year instead. They were good! I wish I knew they had the dipping sauce, though. It would have made them even better!

I have been an Information Volunteer for 17 years at the Iowa State Fair. While I agree that some of these foods are stomach nightmares, one of the reasons that so many people go to the Iowa State Fair is to try new and weird foods. If you had regular healthy foods they would not be as popular as the other foods are. The big things at the Iowa State Fair is foods on sticks. They tried lettuce salad on a stick and no one wanted to eat it. The most popular food this year was the fried butter on a stick. That was because it was the 100th anniversary of the Butter cow which Iowa has every year. If you want to go to an AWESOME state fair come and try Iowa’s!!!!! We are the best!!!
