Chef Michael

Hello! We’re winding down our Spring 2011 season from coast to coast, with only a few shows left. This season has gone by so fast, but I have managed visit some really great places and meet some amazing people, like the singer, Mark Masri.  I even convinced him to come on stage and make a Reuben casserole!

The restaurants and food excursions have been incredible too!  I’ve visited the home of Red Hots, Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, devoured beautiful Maine lobster, and tasted whoopie pies in 12 flavors.  I think it’s safe to say that I might have over indulged a bit this season, but at least I had fun.

Now it’s time to switch gears and start working on the 2011 Fall season. This upcoming season is going to be incredible.  We have some very exciting sponsors and delicious recipes chosen for the program.  You’ll just have to come to a show to see what they are!  Typically preparation starts about five months ahead with recipe selection, program development, and tip and technique selection.  My favorite part, however, is when we fly into our home office in Milwaukee to see all of our colleagues and rehearse the show, from begin to end, as many times as it takes to ensure that we provide the best show around.  It’s going be to much fun! Needless to say, we all love coming into your communities each year to teach and entertain you.

Now its time to get back in the kitchen, practicing our fall program.  Be sure to catch me this fall, in a town near you!

I attended the cooking school in Dunbar, PA on May 25. The show was fun and informational. the problems that i had was the venue was too small and not well ventilated. I have been to 2 schools from taste of home and would like to give a suggestion(question) why isnt there a booth set up by taste of home to purchase their cookbooks and other merchandise? the items the chef showed were very nice but we were not told how to order them or price. this would be very popular for the next show.

Hi Rita! Thanks for your suggestions and comments! I’m passing them along to the Cooking School team.

I am planning on attending a show in Chico, CA. I noticed there are VIP tickets I can purchase, and wondering what the difference is between the VIP and regular tickets.

Sarah @ Love & homemade recipes August 23, 2011 at 1:56 pm

Hi Laura –
The VIP tickets for the Chico, CA show include: reserved seating, high-end raffle prizes, an entry into a $500 prize package, as well as a VIP meet and greet with the Culinary Specialist.

I have to say that I wish I had done my research before buying a ticket to, and attending, a Taste of Home Cooking School. In this day and age there was no reason for me not to know exactly what to expect. But I didn’t do my homework.

I thought this event was going to be so much more than what it was. First of all, the name “Cooking School” implies that there will be actual learning going on. In my ideal in my head, I saw us actually making the recipes right there with the instructor.

As time went on and I read the details of the event after I had purchased my ticket, I realized that there would be far too many people there to have us making anything. Still I held out hope that people from the audience would get to assist the instructor.

My biggest disappointment with the event was that it seemed like a big advertisement. The instructor was forced to extol the virtues of the products involved in the recipe. It was weird to hear a graduate of BYU-Idaho talk about wine.

Having 400 or 500 people wedged into a ballroom at a hotel was not very pleasant, and I fell asleep several times because I was too warm.

Finally, I had a friend who had intended to attend, but read her ticket wrong. The Portland Perks coupon that printed up had only the address of the event. It did not have the date or the time on it. The only date on it was an expiration date of October 11, when the show was on October 10. She didn’t realize until I was texting her to ask her where she was, that she was missing it. I told her I would try to see if there were any goody bags left so she could at least get the recipes used, and the free subscription. To my horror, just before we were released to fight our way out of the parking lot, the radio dj hostess told everyone that there were a lot of goody bags left and they were available for the taking. Since i was sitting near the front of the room, of course I did not make it out there in time, and no one seemed inclined to help me with my problem of a participant who had paid her fee but now got nothing from it.

I will not be attending another Taste of Home Cooking School, ever. I can get cooking demonstrations on TV without the hassle of driving 40 minutes in traffic, sitting in a hot room for over 3 hours, not winning anything, and being forced to listen to an advertising spiel with each recipe.

I attended the cooking school in Van Buren, OH on Nov 1, hosted by Chef Michael. What a great time. He was lively and entertaining…and the recipes were ones I want to try at home! Even when there were lighting issues at the venue, Chef Michael made “light” of it and kept going…pretty soon the whole audience was involved! Maybe in future shows you could provide info on where the serving dishes/platters used in the shows can be purchased at. There was a wooden serving platter that I would love to purchase!!! I have been to several shows and my friend and I are now making this our annual girls night out!! Thank you for bringing these shows to us everyday people!!
