When we go to the grocery store we fill our carts with boxes of cereal, bags of sugar and flour, cartons of eggs, and packages of butter. Back at home, we toss these containers into the garbage without a second thought.
The US dumps 1.4 billion pounds of waste a day. 40% of that is created from packaging that is used only once. These are the statistics and motivation behind the new grocery store in.gredients, America’s first packaging free grocery store.
With a focus to see 100% package-free products such as seasonal produce, grains, spices, fresh meats, dairy and more, in.gredients is the first all sustainable, local, organic, package-free grocery store. Patrons can expect to find healthy, natural ingredients and cleaners. What they won’t find are shelves and shelves of unnecessary boxes. This means that shoppers will have to bring their own containers and bags – but this should help eliminate any additional food waste, because you can only purchase what your containers can store.
You can visit the all new in.gredients in Austin, Texas when it opens it’s doors in October.
Would you shop at a packaging-free grocery store?

Just wondered how you are going to offer fresh meats if you are a vegan store. I’m not vegan, or even vegetarian, just wondered about it. I hope you actually will offer all types of meats. AND I hope that you get some capital inflow and put another store in Tulsa, OK! Love your concept.
Hi Deniseinark -
It just means that the store will have dietary options for vegans and vegetarians – while still offering meat for omnivores! Basically it caters to most dietary preferences.
I love this concept! Would be great if they opened one in OKC also!
Hopefully the store will take off in Austin and soon they’ll be opening more stores!
I absolutely love this concept and hope that other cities adopt something similar.
The hardest part will be to combat the push from the packaging companies about how “unsanitary” it is.
Love this concept. I prefer to buy from the bulk bin if I can find it. But, I have noticed that the packaged goods are cheaper compared to what is in the bulk bin. That is how it used to be in India a decade ago. Popularity and convenience of packaged goods have hit that place too.
