Taste of Home Cooking School personality Michael shares a fun recipe contest for food lovers.

baymont-logoHello, Food Friends!

Life on the road has been crazy, but exciting.  We have a great recipe line-up this Cooking School season, including Shrimp Cakes, Chocolate Eclairs, and Mango Basil Chicken Salad!  I’ve heard from many of you about your favorite recipes, and couldn’t wait to share this with you.

Taste of Home has started a contest called, “Taste of Home’s Hometown Favorites Recipe Contest.” You simply enter your favorite family or hometown recipe at hometownfavorites@rd.com.  The winner gets their recipe in an edition of Taste of Home, as well as a road trip to a favorite destination in your region, with Baymont Hotels.  This is an awesome contest and I’m really excited to see the delicious dishes you enter in the contest!  For more information, go to http://www.tasteofhome.com/tasty-tidbits

Next stop is Corning, NY.  Hope to see you all there!

-Michael

Hi Chef, I had a question about a comment that you said about Classico Sauces. You said they were all mason jars (which is true- I have some and checked it out) but that you couldn’t re-can with them. I was just wondering if that is because its for “safety” reasons or if it is something technical.. Like they use different techniques that make the jars weaker. I’m asking this because I have canning jars (mason and bell) that i reuse and reuse all the time if they are still crack free and don’t break in the canning process. I was just wondering because I would like to reuse them instead of sending them to the landfills. Thanks so much. Enjoyed the taste of home show! Can’t wait till the fall one!

Hi Lisaanne –

This talking point for this particular product is that they aren’t reusable as is purchased. You can reuse the jar, but would have to purchase new lids for the vacuum seal in the canning process. Hope this helps!

Michael, I was at your cooking school in Corning, NY today. I was wondering where I could get the s & p gizmo you used during the show. This was my third show and I loved recipes you did today the best. I will also use the many cooking hints you gave us. Thank you.

Michael,
Was at your show tonight, 4/30/11. Had a great time. Brought my neighbor to her first show and she had a great time, also. In fact she had never heard of Taste of Home magazines. Can’t wait untill next years show.

Just enjoyed your show once again 4-30-11 in Corning NY. You Do A great job up there on stage, looking forward to next years show. You Gave us a substitute for
cake flour and I would like to make sure I wrote it down Correctly.
1 and 3/4 cups flour plus 1/4 cup corn starch equals 2 cups of cake flour?
I have always heard that cake flour has baking powder in it?
Thanks again for the entertainment and hints?

Chef Michael,

Just wanted to thank you for an enjoyable show this evening in Hamburg, NY….I am looking forward to trying at least three of the recipes this weekend…and where do you get the salt and pepper shakers?

Lela Mancuso May 4, 2011 at 10:28 pm

GREAT Taste of home cooking school in Hamburg, NY!
We had a great time, and love all the tips that are extra’s from your experience. Learned lots of tidbits!

Bonnie from Lancaster, NY May 5, 2011 at 6:03 am

Went to the Cooking School last night in Hamburg, N.Y. That was my second one. Loved the cooking demo, recipes, and give aways. Your energy, knowledge, and ease at which you demonstrate make the whole experience enjoyable. Would love to get the salt and pepper gadget you used.
Speaking of gadgets, my group was a bit disappointed on the vendors this year. Since it was a cooking event we felt the choice of vendors were disappointing. To many jewelry and purse vendors. Where were little gadgets for the kitchen, baking items, etc. Things under twenty dollers that would help us in the kitchen, make things easier, aprons, etc. Love the event but that was disappointing. No kits or packages of items such as seasonings, mixes for baking etc.
The entertainment was great but to bad it wasn’t before the show or while people were getting to their seats. After two hours of seating and being later people had to go home since some traveling a distance and working the next day. I felt bad for the singer.
I totally am not complaining and will come again but these are just suggestions which my group discussed and also the undertone I heard while sitting among the groups.
Can’t wait until next year.
