Mmm, hot cross buns. How I love these soft, spiced rolls with their sticky, sweet crosses. I’m starting to wonder why I only enjoy them during the Easter season.
These sweet buns were traditionally eaten on Good Friday, with the cross symbolizing the crucifixion. Today, however, it seems as though these warm treats are enjoyed during the entire Easter season.
Whenever you ask someone if they knew about hot cross buns, you are bound to hear some sort of childhood anecdote. These little buns are guaranteed to evoke long lost memories about sharing pans of buns with neighbors, sneaking in an extra roll when mother wasn’t looking, or sharing a bun with a friend saying, “”Half for you and half for me, Between us two shall goodwill be.”
When I was little my Mom would always sing the “Hot Cross Bun,” nursery rhyme as she rolled out the dough:
Hot cross buns!
Hot cross buns!
One ha’ penny, two ha’ penny,
Hot cross buns!
If you have no daughters,
Give them to your sons
One ha’ penny,
Two ha’ penny,
Hot cross buns!
It’s a silly little ditty, but it always pops into my head whenever I enjoy one of these pastry-like treats.
