It all started with the cupcake. These cakey confections took America by storm, launching an all out attack on the dessert scene. Cupcake-exclusive bakeries were popping up like daisies. These perfectly portioned treats were even taking over at weddings, replacing the all-mighty wedding cake. It seemed as if there was no getting rid of the newly crowned dessert superstar. That is until … the pie.
Ah, yes. Pie. If the cupcake is the hot, popular cheerleader, then I like to think of the pie as the girl next door. It’s comfy, it’s cozy, and it’s reliable. The pie is the old standby – something you can always go back to, like coming home. Plus, it likes to mingle with things like ice cream and velvety whipped cream.
Well, it looks like the tables have turned on the flashy and sugary cupcake. During these rather glum economic times, America is returning to its roots and crowning the pie as their new dessert queen.
While you can easily bake cupcakes to fit your mood as well, pie just seems a little more down-home. Cupcakes can often be a little too stuck-up, a little too frou frou. And to be quite honest, I don’t like to be judged by my dessert.
So America, let’s give this old favorite a standing ovation. Welcome home, pie.
