One of the great things about summer is the large amount of fresh fruit available. When I go to the market, the fresh peaches, plump cherries, delicate plums, and tart blueberries overwhelm me. So much fruit! So many recipes!
Currently, I’m in a pie phase. I love bringing home peaches and transforming them into hot bubbly pies – or making little tartlets with juicy plums. I just have to make sure there is ice cream in the freezer. You can’t have pie without ice cream.
Today, while chatting with the Taste of Home Facebook fans, I was told about Flower Pie Crusts. When I first read the description I was flabbergasted. A pie that looks like a flower? Really? But once I saw what the TOH fans were talking about, I’ve been itching to get home and whip up a fresh “flower pie.”
Here are the steps to making this adorable, easy-to-make pie crust.
1. Using a paring knife, cut pie dough into strips of various size. A 2 or 3 inch round cookie cutter will make the center of the flower.
2. Lay the strips on top of the pie, sporadically overlapping the strips. Top with round center in the middle.
3. Adhere strips together by dabbing with water, or brush egg wash over the finished pie.
4. Sprinkle with coarse sugar and bake.
