Jessica Segarra, the genius behind the blog The Novice Chef, loves to cook. On her blog, she talks about all things delicious – like these scrumptious 100 Grand Cupcakes.
I recently interviewed Jessica about her love for food and her blog, The Novice Chef.
LHR : What was your inspiration behind The Novice Chef?
JS: To be perfectly honest, it started as little more than a place for me to keep up with my recipes. As a newlywed who had never cooked a full dinner, I was just trying to find my way through the kitchen. And then all of a sudden people other than my Mom started reading it and following along. And through my blog and tiny kitchen, I discovered my love for cooking, baking, photographing, writing, and sharing it all with others.

LHR: What has been the most rewarding part about blogging?
JS: Getting to be myself … and having people actually like that person! It is so rewarding to share all of me, with all of my readers, and to have that bond of our love of food to hold it all together.

LHR: What’s your favorite recipe that you’ve made for your blog?
JS: Oh man! That’s a hard question! There have been so many things! The most recent being the 100 Grand Cupcakes. Those things were amazing! The Salted Caramel Frosting was to die for. And the Salsa Verde Sour Cream Enchiladas are one of my all time favorites. They are one of the most requested; most talked about, and most emailed about thing I have ever blogged. They truly are perfection.

LHR: What’s your biggest food triumph? Disaster?
JS: Triumph? Well, probably the first time I got butter cream to swirl just right on top of a cupcake. I finally got the motion down and it was amazing! And as for a disaster … just go check out the time I tried to make my own Ginger Ale. Yeah…that sucked.

LHR: Do you prefer making desserts or savory dishes?
JS: I prefer both, honestly. I just tend to blog a lot more of my desserts because they are so much easier to photograph! It usually takes me 2 to 3 times of actually making a dinner entree before I get a good photograph of it. With desserts I can take my time and they an wait a couple days for the perfect lighting. Dinners have to be shot right then and fast … oh if only you could bottle natural light.
LHR: What are some of your favorite blogs?
JS: For laughs, check out Barefoot Foodie. She talks about nothing food related…but she makes me laugh out loud sometimes. For food, stop by Love and Olive Oil. Not only does she take beautiful photos, but she makes some delicious looking food as well!

What amazing food photography, those two sets of cupcakes look like they should be on my plate for lunch!
I am not a chef in any, but reading the novice chef blog has helped me a lot! Glad to see so many others noticing her talent! I have to try those new cupcakes! Nice article!
I’ve been telling my wife (also a novice chef) about Jessica’s blog hoping she would make me some of those Cherry Coke Float Cupcakes.
