I’ve decided to declare it Camping Week. Why, you ask? Well, because I’ve just returned from a trip in the mountains and I really want to share some of these delicious recipes with you.
So, Dutch ovens. Handy little contraptions, aren’t they. Breakfast, dinner, dips and dessert, you can make practically anything in these cast iron vessels. On my trip, we worked our oven to the bone – sweet cobblers, hearty potatoes, and tender biscuits are just a few of our culinary creations.
But, I have to tell you about my favorite Dutch oven recipe – baked oatmeal.
I love oatmeal. I especially love oatmeal on a cool Colorado morning, with the Rockies in the background, and a steaming mug of Velvet Hammer with just a touch of cream.
Full of spicy cinnamon and delicious brown sugar, this baked oatmeal is like eating a warm, straight-from-the-oven oatmeal cookie. Honestly people, breakfast can’t get any better than this!
Hearty, and healthy oatmeal is blended with butter, milk, classic cinnamon and brown sugar then baked to perfection – Dutch oven style. Top it off with a splash of milk, some ripe blueberries or tart apples, and crunchy walnuts.
Got leftovers? Grab the ice cream! This heavenly recipe makes an outstanding dessert.

I’m a faithful oatmeal consumer! I don’t always eat healthy…but I try. I buy at local Amish and farm markets as much as I can. I will try your oatmeal recipe. I will also link your blog to My Blog list. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. Cooking Books and More (see website address above).
Sarah, I’m going camping tomorrow and would love to make this baked oatmeal. How long did you cook it in the dutch oven?
Thanks!
Linsee –
I’m so sorry I’m getting back to you so late! I hope you got a chance to make this baked oatmeal. I cooked it for about 30 minutes, or until the oatmeal was firm and a toothpick came out clean. I like to splash a bit of milk over it, too. Hope you had a wonderful camping trip!
