I have waited all year for this moment – the arrival of strawberry season.
When I was little, my uncle would take me strawberry picking in Fulton, Missouri. I remember it was a challenge for him to get me to stop eating the berries and to put them in my basket. When we finally got home, my grandma would take our berries and make the most delicious desserts. I my favorite was her strawberry rhubarb cobbler.
Last night I bought my first strawberries of the season. I was so excited that I couldn’t decide what to do with these perfectly formed berries. Should I eat them plain? Sprinkle them with sugar? Dip them in chocolate? My mind was having strawberry recipe overload.
As I assessed my pantry’s ingredients, I found a box of pound cake that I had purchased a couple of weeks earlier. That’s when it hit me. Strawberries served over fresh pound cake with a huge dollop of sweetened whipped cream. Perfect.
After a rather late evening of baking, and cutting, and whipping I finally got to enjoy the spoils of my labor. The strawberries were heaven and the moist pound cake – oh man there are no words. Hit with a huge dollop of whipped cream and ooo baby! Talk about divine! Trust me, you’ll love eating your strawberries this way.
